Luminaire

Product design is a lot of fun for me. I really enjoy getting my hands dirty and feeling my way through to the completion of a project. I enjoyed designing and making these lights.

‘Luminaire’ as an innovative light fitting was inspired by the idea of ‘manna’ - or ‘blessings from above’ and designed to fit into the theme and architecture of a building intended as a food emporium. An emporium however that embodied a sense of wonderment and gratitude for all food and food types within the context of ‘our daily bread’.  Designed to hang from the high heavenly ceiling the light fitting was constructed to look as though ‘manna’ was falling from heaven to earth in a fructifying gesture of pollination and insemination.
To this end I used an ostrich egg as a mould to initiate the construction process for the actual light fittings and using resin as the medium of construction I fabricated these fittings using lace and lace imprints relying on the feminine associations these invoke.  Tiny 10 watt incandescent bulbs were fitted on the inside of these moulds.  I also created multiple tiny fragile resin moulds from chicken egg shells that caught and scattered the light and these were hung randomly in between the larger light moulds in order to realize the form as a whole.   All the moulds were then positioned on a mounting plate that was cut from wood and lime washed the electric fittings hidden on the upper surface of the plate.

Multimedia

Arts and crafts meets design, I enjoy multimedia forms of presentation. This method was particularly useful for my Btech design that was centrally inspired by arts and crafts.

3d Rendering and Hand sketch

Below are examples of how I made my work look more hand done and conceptual.

Lumion

I discovered Lumion last year and I found it to be a great program to put together design concepts over night. The rendering and lighting quality isn't as amazing as 3d AutoCad, but it is highly effective in showing design ideas. Below are a few of my 3ds from Btech.

Process Sketching

Below is an example of my conceptual and process sketches. I have a lot of fun imagining 3d spaces using hand drawing.

Btech extract

Below is a write up about my Thesis design. I really enjoyed my Btech project because it was a project so close to my heart.

Third Year Projects

Below is an example of a third year project. I used coral draw and 3d Autocad. I printed this project and rendered over it. Combining computer and hand rendering.

Photography - Port Elizabeth - Textures

Every now and then I get camera happy, my favourite thing to take photos of is texture. Below are a few photos that I took when walking around the streets of Port Elizabeth.

Second year work - Luminaire

Another second year project using coral draw and hand sketches. This was for the Eskom luminaire competition, I made it to the quarter finals.

Second year work - Hi -Tech store

Below is an example of one of my second year projects. The brief was to create a hi-tech store. I chose to design a music merchandising store. I remember really enjoying this project as I could use the theme of music as my primary inspirational reference.

This project is an example of work done in Sketchup. As is signature with most of my work, I chose to render over my prints to add the final detail by hand.
